Joseph Marshall age 89, of Millcreek Twp., passed away peacefully Sunday, August 7, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Joe was born on August 23, 1926 in Rossford, OH, the son of the late Joseph William and Sophia Vogt Marshall. After graduating from Academy H.S. Joseph served in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean War. He served on a Heavy Cruiser during WWII aboard the USS Portland and was awarded seven bronze battle stars in the South Pacific Theater. In his early years, Joe worked as a fireman on the Rail Road; a job he always loved and admired. Joseph was a graduate of the FBI National Academy; 79th Session, and was a graduate of the PA State Police Academy. He served with the Millcreek Twp. Police Department for 25 years; 21 of those as Chief from 1959 to 1981 and later served as Director of Security at Hamot Medical Center for 9 years. He was past President and Treasurer of the NW PA Chiefs of Police Association, past president of the Erie County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 64, a life member of the PA Chiefs of Police, and Western PA Chiefs of Police, and the Northwestern Chiefs of Police Association. He was a life member of the Siebenbuerger Club where he enjoyed bowling for over 50 years. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge, the American Legion Post 773 in Millcreek, served on the Rape Crisis Center, Family Crisis of Erie County, Stairways, and Governors Criminal Justice Commission Board of Directors. He was a member of the Mercyhurst Advisory Board and a member of the Times Old Newsies. He was a long time member of Our Lady of Peace R.C. Church. He and his wife Loretta would attend the ship reunions which were held all over the country. Rarely would they miss one. He loved his family dearly. He was preceded in death by one sister Helen Marshall Agens, four brothers: Walter and Clifford Marshall and Lawrence and Arthur Guy and one grandson Jared Wykoff. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Loretta L. Hoover Marshall, daughters; Judy Ann Schlindwein of Jackson, TN, Susan Goldthwaite (Eugene “Hugo”) of Waterford, Nancy LaMaye (James) of Millcreek, grandchildren: Jennifer West (Andy), Tommy Harper (Mark), Tanner Schlindwein, Kayla Wykoff, great-granddaughters Ella and Sierra West, one brother Fredrick Marshall of Erie, and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Monday, August 15, 2016 from 6 p.m. until time of Memorial Service at 7:30 p.m. conducted by the Rev. John Detisch. A full Military service will follow. Private inurnment. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Safe Net, 1702 French Street, Erie, PA 16501 or to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 2810 West 21st Street, Ste 12, Erie, PA 16506.
