Madeline “Mud” Metz Hayes

Madeline “Mud” Metz Hayes, age 94, passed away at St. Mary’s at Asbury Ridge on Monday, June 9, 2025. She was born in Erie on August 19, 1930, the daughter of the late Katherine Runser Metz Barohn and Edward Metz.

She was a graduate of Academy H.S., class of 1948. She was a member of St. Jude R.C. Church. She worked for the Millcreek Twp. School District until her retirement. She loved reading, shopping, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She enjoyed her monthly luncheons with the St. Joseph’s class of ’44. She loved animals and belonged to organizations working toward the prevention of cruelty to animals.

Mud was preceded in death by her husband, Ardell (Art) Hayes, one sister Kathy Klemm, a brother-in-law James Klemm, one brother Edward Metz, Jr. and her step-father William Barohn.

She is survived by two daughters; Cheryl Stewart (Tim), Connie Jackson (Don), her grandchildren; Lindie Stewart Bethune (Marc) and Jeffrey Stewart, great-grandchildren; Lottie and Max Bethune.

A private service under the direction of the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. was held with interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
