Joseph Kyle Rudler

Joseph Kyle Rudler, 48, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on July 3, 2026, at his home in New York City.

Born on December 26, 1977, to Ron and Karen Rudler in Erie, Pennsylvania, he truly was their first miracle baby. Joe embraced life with extraordinary generosity. He loved deeply, gave freely, and had a remarkable ability to make every person feel seen, valued, and welcome. Whether with family or friends, he was fully present, finding joy in shared experiences and meaningful connections.

Moving from the Northwestern School District in 1990, Joe became a star swimmer and was recruited by several schools out of McDowell High School before choosing Columbia University, where he pursued both his athletic and academic ambitions. He earned a degree in Art History, beginning a lifelong appreciation for beauty, culture, and design. Columbia introduced him to New York City, and he grew into a “Manhattan Man,” as his parents lovingly called him. The City became his greatest source of inspiration and remained the backdrop of the life he so thoughtfully created. New York was Joe’s lifelong spiritual guide, and a canvas on which he painted his life.

Inspired by the resilience and unity he witnessed following 9/11, Joe answered a call to serve. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 2004 and after being encouraged by his superiors, completed Officer Candidate School, commissioning as an Ensign in 2005. He served honorably through 2007, completing one of the most difficult schools, Explosive Ordnance Dive (EOD). He remained deeply proud of the purpose, discipline, and lifelong camaraderie his service provided.

Joe possessed a discerning eye and an insatiable curiosity. He found beauty in fashion, interiors, architecture, art, literature, and gardens, approaching each with equal passion. His career reflected those interests, spanning publishing, hospitality, technology marketing, and later brand marketing at Walmart’s Headquarters in Springdale, Arkansas before ultimately bringing his talents back to New York City in 2012, where he concluded his career with Samsung.

Joe made his final home uptown in Inwood, where he lived with his beloved corgi, Lachlan, his little man. He found peace in the neighborhood's parks, gardens, waterfront, and its multi-cultural community. It was a place that perfectly reflected his love of nature within the city he cherished.

Joe's greatest gift was his ability to bring people together. He cultivated friendships across every chapter of his life, and he effortlessly connected each of them with one another. Many of his closest friends first met because Joe introduced them, and those friendships became part of the legacy he leaves behind.

Known for his quick wit and, at times, sharp tongue, generous spirit, impeccable taste, and infectious sense of humor; Joe believed everyone deserved to be surrounded by beauty. An avid gardener and lover of the water, he found happiness in creating welcoming spaces in his apartments where people could gather, laugh, and feel at home. Those fortunate enough to know him often joked that Joe made them better dressed, better collectors, and more appreciative of good design. But above all, he made them better friends which each can attest made them better people.

Joe is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Larry and Dee Rudler, and his maternal grandparents, Cap and Marge Griffey.

Joe is survived by his parents, Ronald and Karen Rudler of Erie, Pennsylvania and his younger brother, Derek Rudler of Erie. He is also survived by his Uncle Bob (Sue) Rudler, Aunt Kathy (Rich Medwick) Griffey, Aunt Karol (Scott) Taylor, and Aunt Kay (Craig) MacKelvey. His surviving cousins are Neal Rudler, Adrianne (Mike) Platz, Rory (Amanda) Taylor, Erin (Ben) Crawford, Connor MacKelvey, and Caitllyn (Noah) Schuler. He is also survived by his Great Aunt Donna Jane (Griffey) Battersby.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by The Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home in Erie, Pennsylvania. The family will be hosting a private memorial service immediately followed by a Celebration of Life.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Housing Works (www.housingworks.org), the EOD Warrior Foundation (eod-wf.org), or East Coast Corgi Rescue (www.eastcoastcorgirescue.org), three organizations that reflected Joe's values and life passions.
