Obituary of Mercedes E. Nelson

Mercedes “Merce” E. Nelson, age 96, of Millcreek Twp., passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at Pleasant Ridge Manor. She was born on October 22, 1919 in Erie, the daughter of the late Edwin R. and Esther Johnson Nelson, Sr. She worked for Brown Family’s Hill Mill Dairy Stores and for her brother Clarence Nelson as a bookkeeper who managed clothing stores in Erie. She was a member of Church of the Cross and received the Woman of the year in 1994 for Business and Professional Women and was a member of the Hamot Aide Society for many years. She was the Matriarch of the Nelson Family. She enjoyed traveling and reading and later in life she and her brother Edwin ensured that their mom and dad could spend their retired years in a new home of their own. She was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters. She is survived by one brother Edwin R. Nelson, Jr. and his wife Rose of Millcreek Twp. and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Friday, May 20, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. for a Memorial Prayer Service. Private interment Laurel Hill Cemetery. The family wishes to thank all the nurses and care givers at Pleasant Ridge Manor for their over and above loving care for Merce. A special thank you to Karol Linden for all her devoted time she gave unconditionally to her Aunt Merce. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Cross, 5901 Millfair Rd., Erie, PA 16415 or to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 1645 West 8th Street, Erie, PA 16505.
