James “Jim” R. Kelvington, Ph.D., age 80, of Millcreek Twp., passed away Thursday, July 14, 2016 at his residence. He was born on January 10, 1936. He and his wife, Elaine moved to Erie from Pittsburgh in 1965 where Jim was hired to teach Anthropology at Gannon College. He graduated from Crafton H.S. in 1954 and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy from Muskingum College in 1958 and received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Duquesne University in 1966. He held a number of positions, but his enjoyment came working for Gannon University as an Instructor and Assistant Professor in Philosophy, and eventually became the Director of Planned Giving in the University Advancement Office until his retirement in 2015. Jim was a member of St. Peter’s Cathedral where he sang in the choir and was a regular lay reader. He also sang with the Philharmonic Choir and enjoyed music, church, reading (particularly Spiritual books on Religion), and traveling. His love of photography could be seen in his works around Erie of Lake Erie sunsets and the Cathedral. He was preceded in death by his wife Elaine in 2015. He is survived by two daughters; Susan Heath of Durham, SC, Irma Lynch (Bill) of Millcreek Twp., one son Paul Kelvington (Alison) of Chicago, IL, seven grandchildren: Alex, Zack, and Ashley Heath, Lindsey, Matt, and Jeremy Lynch, and Will Kelvington, four great-grandchildren: Destiny, Max, Finn, and Ava Heath, one brother-in-law Henry Bown (Anita), and several nephews, nieces, and cousins. Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Sunday, July 17, 2016 from 4 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and are invited there on Monday, July 18, 2016 at 9:15 a.m. for prayers followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Peter’s Cathedral, 230 West 10th Street at 10:00 a.m. Interment Laurel Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Erie Regional Cancer Center, 2500 West 12th Street, Erie, PA 16505.
