Esther Ruth Yorty Laniewicz Powden, age 91, of Millcreek Twp., passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at her residence at Westlake Woods. She was born on October 27, 1924 in Hummelstown, PA, the daughter of the late Jack and Violet Johnson Yorty. Esther served in the US Navy during WWII where she met and married a handsome sailor, Sigmund Joseph Laniewicz. They were married for 32 years until his passing in 1978 at the age of 56. She moved to Harrisburg in 1979 and married Nelson Powden. They were together for eighteen years until his passing. She moved back to Erie in 2013 and resided at Westlake Woods Assisted Living. Esther is survived by five children: John Laniewicz of Edinboro, Stephen Laniewicz (Karen) of Ashland, VA, Michael Laniewicz (Dr. Kathleen Golden) of Cambridge Springs, Toni Uveges (Charles) of Erie, Susan Laniewicz of Harrisburg, three grandchildren: Aaron Laniewicz (Andrell), Dr. Megan Laniewicz (Jed White), Kim Kitts, four great-grandchildren: Jonathan Kitts (Madelynne), Jaclyn Kitts, Keegan, and Alessa White. Also surviving are two step children, three step grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren, and one step great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by two sisters. She enjoyed square dancing, reading, and puzzles. Private services and interment at Laurel Hill Cemetery were held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were handled by the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Erie Regional Hospice, 3526 Peach Street, Erie, PA 16508.
