Lee D. Carr Lee D. Carr of Millcreek Twp. and Las Vegas, NV died suddenly on Monday, July 13, 2009 at Hamot Medical Center. He was born in Mount Clemens, MI, the son of the late, Leigh and Frances Carr. He graduated with a BS in Chemistry from Michigan Tech and a Masters in Chemical Engineering from MIT. Lee entered the US Army Air Corps in 1940 as an Aviation Cadet and graduated from flight school as a Pilot in 1942. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and placed on active duty in the European Theatre of Operations, flying C-47's. During his service in WWII, he was awarded three Distinguished Flying Crosses, four Air Medals, the Presidential Unit Citation, and eight Campaign Stars on his Europe/Africa/Middle East Campaign Medal, the British Distinguished Flying Cross, the British Parachute Badge and the Yugoslavian Partisan Star 2nd Class. One of his fondest wartime memories was of Marshall Tito awarding him the Yugoslavian Partisan Star at the end of the war for flying Tito off a mountain as he was being surrounded by the Germans. He was discharged from active duty at the end of WWII in 1945. He entered the US Air Force Reserves until 1966 retiring with the rank of Colonel. He was employed as an engineer for Dole in Hawaii, was senior marketing manager for American Cyanamid International Division and he was a partner in Secodyne (chemical manufacturing). Lee was a Mason and belonged to the Erie Maennerchor Club. He enjoyed traveling, golfing and fishing. He is survived by his wife of thirty years, Cheryle Roberts Carr, one son, Eric S. Carr of Mountainview, CA, one daughter, Lisa D. Carr of Belgrade, ME. a sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Jim Caldwell, niece, Kalyn and nephew Kyle (Stephanie) Caldwell, and great nephew, Cole James Caldwell. Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 4216 Sterrettania Rd on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service there at 1:00 p.m. A full military service will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery following the funeral service. Lee loved all animals especially his dog, Kazi, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Erie Humane Society, 2707 Interchange Rd., Erie, PA 16506 or John Kanzius Cancer Research, Palace Business Center, 915 State St., Erie, PA 16501.
