Obituary of Ralph L. Carver

Ralph L. Carver, 91, passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Asbury Ridge on Sept. 10, 2015. Ralph was born on March 11, 1924 in Erie. He was the son of the late Naomi Ohlson and Fred Carver. After attending Tech High School, Ralph served in the U.S. Army’s 87th Infantry Division as Technical Sergeant during World War II. He saw combat in France, the Saar region of Germany, then in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. Service related recognitions included the Bronze Star and most recently by decree of French President Holland, appointed a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. He received his medal at the French Embassy in Washington D.C. in June of 2013. Ralph worked at Remington Rand in Erie and was transferred several times over the years. He and his family, made their home in Milford CT, Bridgeport CT, Metuchen NJ, and Cherry Hill NJ. After retiring, he and his wife Marion returned to Erie where they enjoyed sharing their lives with family and many lifetime friends. Ralph was an avid model builder and collector of toy trains, planes, ships, trolleys, die cast trucks and toy cars. He was involved in establishing the Erie Marx Toy Museum. Known for his generosity he recently donated much of his collections to children via the Toys for Tots Organization. He was a member of the American Legion of Wesleyville, a past member of the Erie Maennerchor Club, the Siebenbuerger Club and a life member of the National Train Collectors Association. For 66 years Ralph was married to Marion Schloss Carver and together they had five children, Kevin in Stockbridge GA, Mark and Cheryl in Phippsburg ME, Holly and Bob McShane in Peoria AZ, Brian in Erie PA, and Shawn and Patty in Cape Coral FL. They also had three grandchildren, Stacey Carver, Rob McShane and Kerry McShane Warner along with one great grandson, Daniel Carver. Also surviving are, daughter-in-law Denise Carver, sister Myrna Jares and sister-in-law LaVerne Carver, along with several nieces and nephews. Brothers Fred (Virginia) of Cleveland, OH, Dick (Ruth) of Erie, Chuck (Phyllis) of Glendora, CA, Louis of N. Fort Myers, FL and one sister Mary (Wayne) Keller of Florida all preceded him in death. There will be no visitation however there will be a Memorial Service with full military honors at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. A celebration of Ralph’s life will follow at the Erie Shrine Club. Memorials may be offered to St. Mary’s Asbury Ridge, 4855 West Ridge Rd., Erie, PA 16506 or to a charity of your choice. The family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful care that Ralph received from the Nurses and Aides and all who helped care for him at St. Mary’s Asbury Ridge.
