Obituary of Michael J. Simon

Michael J. Simon, age 60, of Millcreek Twp., passed bravely from this world after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer on Wednesday, October 28, 2015. He was born in Erie on March 17, 1955, the beloved son of Jerry Simon of Millcreek Twp. and the late Vangela Klapsinos Simon. He was a 1974 graduate of McDowell High School and in his early years he enjoyed playing tennis and handball. His years of employment were spent at the family business, Simon Building Products. Michael enjoyed many things, especially karaoke and bowling. Michael was a huge fan of the Erie Bay Hawks Basketball team. He served on the Board of Directors at the Presque Isle Condominiums Association. He was a life-long parishioner of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church and was very involved with the annual Greek Festival. Michael was known to be a friend to all and would help anyone who needed help. He was such a giving person. He was preceded in death by his mother, Vangela Simon, his Godparents Fannie and George Markopoulos, his uncle Marko Klapsinos and his cousin Daniel Xethakis. Besides his father, Michael is survived by his daughters; Dena Oliver, Jamie Simon, two grandsons; Jayden and Wyatt Oliver, two brothers; Jerome Simon (Lois) of Fairview, Paul Simon (Denise) of Fairview, a close friend Elaine Wright of Hermitage, PA, several aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, and a niece. Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Sunday, November 1, 2015 from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. A Trisagion Service will be held there at 5:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, November 2, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 4376 West Lake Rd., with the Rev. Theofanis Nacopoulos officiating. Interment will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, the church he dearly loved.
