Obituary of John C. Engel

John C. Engel, age 83 of Springhill Senior Living, Erie, died Tuesday at Forestview Nursing Home.
He was born on April 5, 1932 in Erie, the son of the late Ernest and Ella Pollock Engel.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Erie. He had previously been a long time member of Luther Memorial Church where he was deeply involved in the founding of the Luther Memorial Learning Center (now known as the Luther Memorial Academy). He was also a Clown for Christ with the name of “Periwinkle”. He enjoyed woodworking and counted cross stitching.
Jack attended West Virginia Institute of Technology for printing and graduated from the Southern School of Printing in Nashville, Tennessee.
He served with U.S. Army from 1955-1957 as a crypto repairman in France. After his honorable discharge, he started his career in printing at Hayes Manufacturing and moved to Donn Advertising when Zurn Industries acquired Hayes. He worked as the Production Manager of the print shop until his retirement in 1994 after over 30 years of service. He began his second career at Kada Galleries making frames for the artwork.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Sorensen.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Gesler Engel, whom he married on September 4, 1954; a daughter Lisa De Los Santos, Denton, TX and a son, Greg (Debbie) Engel, M.D., Erie. He is also survived by his brother Ernie (Elinor) Engel, Chattanooga, TN and Beatty Ward, Meadville, brother and sister-in-law Albert Gesler, Jr.(Edwina), four grandchildren, Alicia Hughes, Ana Creek, Stephanie Engel and Ben Engel, five great grandchildren and multiple nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend the funeral service at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 32nd & Sterrettania St. on Friday at 11:00 with Pastor Scott Maxwell, Pastor Albert Gesler, Jr. and Rev. J.R. Wagner officiating.
The interment will be at the Luther Memorial Columbarium at a later date.
