Obituary of Mary Ungerman

Mary Klapsinos Xethakis Ungerman, age 88, of Erie, passed away Friday, April 8, 2016 at Sarah A. Reed Retirement Ctr. She was born in Erie on July 2, 1927, the daughter of the late George and Angeliko Vernados Klapsinos. Mary lived in CA, VA, and TN with her husband during his Navy career. She moved to Erie in 1953 after his death. Mary was employed at Halle Bros. downtown and the West Erie Plaza, Carlisles downtown and she volunteered for Hospice, church bake sales, craft shows, and the Panegyri Festival. She was a member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church for over sixty years and was a member of its choir. Mary enjoyed doing crafts, making centerpieces, favors for weddings, and golfing with her husband, John. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Louis Xethakis, her second husband, John Ungerman, one son Danny Xethakis, one sister Vangela Simon, one brother Marko Klapsinos, and one nephew Michael Simon. She is survived by one daughter Maria Burenko (Michael), three sisters: Helen Pappas (Nick), Irene Harpst (Ron), Stella Athans (John), one sister-in-law Libra Klapsinos, one brother-in-law Jerry Simon, her Godchild Christelle DeCrease, a special friend who was like a daughter to her, Lynnette Coleman, and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. A Trisagion Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Service, officiated by the Rev. Theofanis Nacopoulos will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 4376 West Lake Rd., Erie, PA 16505. Interment Laurel Hill Cemetery.
