Obituary of Martha C. Verga

Martha C. Simko Verga, 90, of St. Mary’s Home of Erie East, passed away there on Sunday June 11, 2017.  She was born on November 22, 1926 in Sheffield, PA, daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Jevscak Simko.

Martha graduated from Sheffield High School in 1944, where she sang in the chorus and lettered in basketball.  In 1947, she graduated from the U.S. Cadet Nursing Corps at St. Vincent’s Hospital as a Registered Nurse and upon graduation she worked at St. Vincent’s and Hamot Hospitals.  She enjoyed hand embroidery, crossword puzzles, gardening, pinochle and bingo. She was a member of Sacred Heart R.C. Church for sixty years.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death her husband Russell M. Verga and her grandson Sgt. Jesse M. Verga, USMC. 

She is survived by her son, Gerald (Susan) Verga, daughter Cheryl (Kenneth) Daub; two grandchildren, Nicole (Pete) and Gabriel (Jennifer) and four great-grandchildren.  She is further survived by two brothers, Eugene Simko of Jamestown, NY, John Simko of Florida and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Chapel of St. Mary’s Home of Erie East on Monday from 10:30AM until the time of the Funeral Mass at 12:00 noon.  Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the care of the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home & Crematory Inc. 4216 Sterrettania Rd.
