Elaine Idell Irish Bingham

Elaine Idell Irish Bingham of Meadville, passed away at age 84 peacefully with her family surrounding her on Saturday, July 29, 2017.

Mom loved obituaries! The wordier the better!  The John begat Jimmy and Sue begat Sally were all well and good, but mom loved the stories behind the people.  So those obits that told of the person rather than the statistics were her favorites.  So, for our mother, here’s our attempt to tell of the person our mother was.

Mom loved a lot of things but genealogy was high on her list.  She traced our ancestors back to Norway, England and Germany, which pretty much made us European mongrels. She spent hours on her computer looking up births, deaths, marriages, divorces, and yes, obituaries to find out what made our family… our family.  When she wasn’t on the computer, she was working in her garden or greenhouse nurturing plants as she did her six children.  Some of us children inherited a craft gene from her as she loved to make things as well as tear things up.   We especially remember Dad coming home to a wall missing because Mom wanted to make the living room larger!

We could create a list of her accomplishments that would go on forever, but a few of the really important ones would be, she attended, and graduated college with a teaching degree while raising all her children.  She owned a couple businesses, ‘Binghams Greenhouse’ and ‘The Donut Tree’ when she lived in Cambridge Springs, Pa.   She loved to play her piano and would share her political views with anyone who would listen.  She absolutely loved her family and was happiest when everyone came to family reunions.

Mom was preceded in death by her parents, Sidney Ford and Mary Anna Bortner Irish and in 2009 by her one true love, Robert E. Bingham after nearly 60 years of marriage.  It was her fondest wish to join our Dad and grandparents in life everlasting.  And now she has.

Mom is survived by her daughters, Nancy Malena and her love Tony DiLuzio of Erie, Margaret Adams of Erie, Janice Lipps and husband, Tom Shafer of Conneaut Lake, John Bingham of Conneaut Lake, Ronald Bingham and wife, Suzann of Lakeside, AZ and Mark Bingham and wife Cindy, of Meadville.  Mom also is survived by two sisters, Eleanor Bonnell of Meadville, Kathryn Adams, husband Don, of Erie and one brother William Irish, wife Becky, of Erie.  She also has many, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews surviving her.  She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home & Crematory Inc. 4216 Sterrettania Rd. Erie, PA 16506, on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM until the time of the funeral service there at 8:00 PM.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Grahamville Burying Grounds, North East, PA, beside a headstone which was designed by our Mom.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to either, American Diabetes Foundation, 2 Chatham Center, Suite 1520, 112 Washington Place, Pittsburgh, PA 15219 or the Regional Cancer Center 2500 West 12th. St. Erie, PA 16505.
