Alvin L. Irwin
Alvin L. Irwin, age 82, of Millcreek Twp., passed peacefully on Tuesday, August 7, 2018. He was born in Swissvale, PA on August 19, 1935, the son of the late Leslie M. and Gladys E. Potter Irwin. Alvin received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He served for eight years in the USNR.
Alvin had a very successful career at Erie Insurance for 30 years. He retired as a Senior Vice President in 1996.
Alvin was a football booster for Strong Vincent H.S., a volunteer and philanthropist for the Erie Maritime Museum and Brig Niagara, a member of the Barn Theater in Stuart, FL, a volunteer and philanthropist for the FL Oceanographic Coastal Center, a former member of Elmwood Ave. Presbyterian Church, a member of Peace Presbyterian Church in Stuart, FL. He enjoyed playing the role of Santa Claus at Erie Insurance for many years.
He loved volunteering and doing his philanthropy work, boating and the water, and was very proud of his grandchildren.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Jean Rooney, one brother Captain Harry Emerson Irwin (USN), and one son-in-law Shane I. Murdock.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years Audrey R. Barley Irwin, one daughter Stephanie M. Murdock of Millcreek Twp., two sons; Craig W. Irwin (Lisa) of Lancaster, SC, Alan R. Irwin (Kathleen) of Erie, eight grandchildren: Lucas, Alaina, Natalie (Drew), Alexander, Joshua, Rachel, Connor, Pierce, one great-grandchild Audra and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank Sunrise Senior Living (Bickford), Millcreek Community Hospital, and LECOM Health Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Sunday, August 12, 2018 from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to Elmwood Ave. Presbyterian Church, 2816 Elmwood Ave., Erie, PA 16508 on Monday, August 13, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. for the Funeral Service. Private interment Laurel Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Barber National Institute, 100 Barber Place, Erie, PA 16507.
