Obituary of Melanie J Ballew

Melanie Jonnette (Krauth) Ballew, 59 of Erie, PA passed away on February 24, 2021 at her home with loving family by her side, following a courageous 2 ½ year battle with breast cancer. She was born in Dunkirk, NY on February 19, 1962 to Charles and Barbara (Ransom) Krauth of Brocton, NY. Melanie graduated from Brocton Central High School where she met her high school sweetheart and husband of 38 years, Owen H. Ballew Jr., whom she married on October 2, 1982 in Brocton, NY. After earning her degree in medical transcription, Owen and Melanie made their home in Erie where Melanie worked as a medical transcriptionist at Hamot Medical Center and UPMC-Hamot. She was a resident of Erie for over 40 years.
Melanie touched so many lives as a model of love, patience, and strength to all that knew her. She was a loving wife and mother, immensely proud of her children leaving behind nothing but beautiful memories and knowledge.
Melanie will be deeply missed by her husband Owen H. Ballew Jr. their children, Kaitlin G. (Ballew) Hanes and her husband James D. Hanes III of Erie and Owen A. Ballew of Erie; two grandsons, James D. Hanes IV and Lincoln O. Hanes. Melanie is further survived by her father, Charles Krauth of Brocton, NY; sisters, Michelle (Krauth) and Brian Walsh of Jupiter, FL, Marlene Krauth and Bonita Wheeler of Pottstown, PA, and Melissa (Krauth) and Eric Bubbenmoyer of Lenhartsville, PA; brother; Michael and Jennifer (Dolce) Krauth of Lakewood, NY; sisters-in-law, Janet (Chafin) Roberts of Mesa, AZ, Betty (Ballew) DeLand of Brocton, NY, Pam (Ballew) and Todd Cleary of Buckatunna, MS, Anne (Ballew) Smith of DeLand, FL and Caroll (Ballew) Wester of Oil City, PA and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Krauth; mother and father-in-law, Owen and Adeline Ballew, and two brothers-in-law, Roy DeLand and Bob Smith.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home & Crematory Inc. 4216 Sterrettania Rd. Erie, PA 16506.
