Obituary of Joan Marie Moore

Please share a memory of Joan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Joan Marie Page Moore Joan Marie Page Moore, of Erie, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2021 at the age of 84. She was born on March 16, 1936, in the middle of a blizzard, at Hamot Hospital to the late Mary Schaper Page and Gerald Page. She attended Roosevelt Middle School and then graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1954. She initially attended Allegheny College and joined the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority prior to marrying her middle school sweetheart, Richard Moore, in 1958. While raising two children, she returned to college at Edinboro, where she earned two degrees in education. She then began a lifelong career of teaching others, originally as a First-Grade teacher at Montclair and then Ridgefield Elementary schools. She went on to teach future educators at Mercyhurst College. Joan spent a large portion of her life dedicated to education, including repeatedly returning to teach at Mercyhurst despite retiring multiple times and continuing to volunteer with Hooked on Books once she did finally retire. She spent many years volunteering at the Second Harvest Food Bank and then the Presque Isle Lighthouse. “Grandma Magic,” or, “Mummum,” as she was known to her grandchildren, spent many summers creating memorable games and events to entertain her family. She loved birdwatching in her spare time and enjoyed the winters of her later years spent near Sarasota, Florida. She also maintained relationships with friends she made from a young age and from her teaching years. While she had a long, full life, she will still be sorely missed by those who loved her, especially for her wonderful sense of humor and sunny outlook on life regardless of the situation. She was preceded in death by her brother, Gary Schaper Page, her parents, several cousins, and her beloved husband of 60 years, Richard Whiteman Moore, who she met at the age of 14. She is survived by two children, Steven Moore (Becky) of Dallas, TX and Dr. Susan Moore (David Miller) of Erie, as well as four grandchildren, Fr. Jeffrey Moore of Burlington, WA, Dr. Mary Lasher of Erie, Timothy Lasher (Anastasia Chrzanowski) of Oakland, CA, and Amy Moore of Seattle, WA, as well as many dearly cherished lifelong friends. Her family is deeply grateful for the loving care given to Joan during her time at Saint Vincent Hospital and Saint Mary’s at Asbury Ridge. Calling hours will be on Friday, March 5, 2021 from 6-8 pm and Saturday, March 6, 2021 from 9-11 am at Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., located at 4216 Sterrettania Rd, followed by a Funeral Service on March 6 at 11 am held at the same location. Interment Laurel Hill Cemetery. COVID restrictions will be in place. A more joyous celebration of her life will be held once life has returned to some semblance of normalcy. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Presque Isle Lighthouse or Second Harvest Foodbank of Northwest PA.
