Robert George Finney
Robert "Rob" G. Finney, age 87, formerly of 5706 West Ridge Rd., died Friday, October 22, 2010, at Manchester Presbyterian Lodge. He was born in Erie on March 20, 1923, the son of the late, Edward J. and Hannah M. Bainbridge Finney. Robert was a graduate of Academy H.S. in the June class of 1942.
He was a member of Perry-Keystone Lodge #392 F. & A.M., Erie Scottish Rite, and Zem Zem Temple Brass Band. He worked for the US Postal Service, Motor Vehicle Facility, for thirty one years until his retirement in 1979.
He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946 and achieved the rank of Petty Officer First Class (Torpedo Man) during his initial enlistment. He served in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Pacific Theaters and received a Battle Star for his WWII service. He was home ported in Casco Bay, Portland, ME on the Flag Ship for the North Atlantic Destroyer Fleet. He participated in several major events: North Atlantic, Invasion in South France, Marshall Islands, and completed his enlistment on Guam, Mariana Islands. He was discharged at Treasure Island, San Francisco, CA on Christmas Day, 1946.
Robert owned and operated Lakeland Printing Service for 43 years and retired in 1999. He enjoyed his many customers/friends during those years. He also enjoyed driving and working on classic and antique cars.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife whom he married in 1981, Lois E. Finney, in April 2009, three brothers: James E. Finney, who died on June 14, 1943 while serving his country with the US Army Air Force in the South Pacific., Charles R. Finney in infancy, and a brother who died at birth.
He is survived by one son, Gary R. Finney (Mary Margaret) of Erie, one daughter, Sherry L. Horrigan (Richard) of Richmond, VA, two step-daughters, Virginia A. Lloyd of Louisville, TX, Constance J. Jones (Mark) of Tarpon Springs, FL, four grandchildren: Valerie, Justin, and Melanie Finney, and Jared Horrigan; three step-grandchildren: Brent, Jaime, and Lacey Weiss.
Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Monday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited there on Tuesday for the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Interment Laurel Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 1645 West 8th Street, Erie, PA 16505.
