Obituary of Paul H. Sandstrom, M.D.

Paul H. Sandstrom, M.D. Paul H. Sandstrom, M.D., 86, passed away on Tuesday, June 21, 2022. Born in Erie Pennsylvania, on March 24, 1936 he was a graduate of Strong Vincent HS, Kenyon College, and Temple University Medical School, and served with the Navy during the early years of the Vietnam War. Paul was devoted to his family, his friends, and his church. His passing on Midsommar is so fitting because of his love of his Swedish roots. He was an avid traveler and golfer and enjoyed music of all types. Paul supported the VA and volunteered at Shriner’s hospital; lately focusing on veteran’s affairs. He took on many roles including Chairman of Radiology, Chairman of Medical staff, member of the board of Hamot Medical Center as well as President of the Erie County Medical Society; always committed to service to his community. Paul was a member at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, sang bass in the choir, took up the banjo later in life; eventually leading The Lake Erie Banjo Jammers. Paul’s love of music led his family to follow in his footsteps. Paul was preceded in death by his parents Nils Gustaf Sandstrom and Lilly Marie Sandstrom. Paul leaves behind his wife of 64(!) blessed years, Shirley Gillespie Sandstrom. Paul and Shirley knew each other at Strong Vincent but did not start dating until they were set up by a close friend on a date while in college. Paul and Shirley always say they fell in love on that very night. He is also survived by his sister Ruth Bostrom of St. Louis, children Paul Eric Sandstrom (Thillai) of Gerrardstown, WV, John Sandstrom (Sabine) of West Chester PA, Robert Mark Sandstrom of Erie, and Kristin Schreel (Christopher) of Kettering, OH. Grandchildren; Rose Chonko (Matt), Rachel Flora (Brett), Iuna DeSousa, Hannah Knarr (Jordan), Peter Sandstrom (Jen), Alex Duffy, Tori and Matthew Sandstrom, and Lilly, Kate, and Thurman Schreel. Additional survivors include great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members in Sweden. Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Sunday, June 26, 2022 from 3-7 p.m. Paul’s life will be celebrated at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Monday, June 27, 2022, at 11 a.m. Interment Laurel Hill Cemetery.
