Vera was a graduate of Villa Maria Academy and worked many years as a secretary for Culligan. She was a long-time member of the Maennerchor and Siebenbuerger Clubs. She belonged to the Blessed Sacrament Ladies Guild as well as Our Lady of Peace Ladies Guild. Vera loved to bowl with her husband, sisters, and friends and took part in bowling leagues which she always held dear to her heart. She loved going to the casino to play slot machines and even traveled to casinos in Las Vegas. Vera enjoyed playing the piano and was always modest about her ability. She would listen to her favorite pianists like Dino and Liberace and sing to Perry Como music while reminiscing on the good ol’ days. At home, Vera was always baking something, whether apple pies every Sunday for her family or her favorite cookies which were oatmeal raisin. Sweets were the way to her heart and she couldn’t resist a piece of Stefanelli’s sponge candy or chocolate covered cherries. She loved hosting a big family party for Christmas Eve every year. The dining room was always full of food and chatter while the living room was filled with gifts to be exchanged. She was crafty and enjoyed knitting homemade gifts like matching hats for the guys and slippers for the ladies. Vera was proud of the family’s German heritage and always was sure to cook a pork roast with sauerkraut to ring in the New Year with her loved ones. She had numerous great memories to share about her family growing up and raising her kids.
Vera lost all of her eyesight prior to going to Saint Mary’s Home yet she remained strong and courageous through the years. She was a favorite to many of her caregivers and she will be deeply missed. It is for this reason that The Sight Center of NW PA, 2545 West 26th Street, Erie, PA 16506, was chosen for donations to be made in her memory.
