Samuel K. Simpson, age 90, of Fairview Twp., loving brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and husband, passed away on Monday, March 31, 2023, at his daughter’s home following a brave fight due to an extended illness. He was born in Timblin, PA on May 12, 1932, the son of the late Wilma Ruth Hoover Simpson and Hallie C. Simpson. He was a life-long resident of Erie.
Sam was a graduate of Girard High School. Upon graduating, he enlisted in the Air Force where he served from 1950 through 1953 with the 49th Fighter Bomber Unit in the Korean War and at the Pentagon. After serving our country, he continued his education earning an M.B.A. in Industrial Management. He finished his career with AMSCO as Senior Industrial Engineer.
He was a long-time member of the Glenwood United Methodist Church; serving as lay leader, lay speaker, and participated on the Council of Ministries. Most recently, Sam was a member of The Church of the Cross in Fairview Twp. where he served as a church Elder.
Sam loved sailing, hunting, biking, kayaking, skydiving, missionary trips with his church, volunteering with the amateur radio club, Toastmasters Club, being lead tax-preparer for the Erie area, and participating in faith-building outreach missions through various organization.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years Phyllis M. Simpson, his brother Hal Simpson, and his daughter Carin W. Deering. Survivors include his wife of 17 years Mary Lou Simpson, of Weirton, WV, his loving daughters; Cindy C. Groninger and husband Frank D. of Camp Hill, PA, Cathleen G. Bodamer and husband Thomas F. of Titusville, PA, two stepchildren; Tamara Green and husband Jeffrey of Weirton, WV., and Randy Roach and wife Sammy of Follansbee, WV. Sam is also survived by his siblings; Mr. Paul Simpson, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene and Becky Simpson, and Mr. and Mrs. Carol and Richard Valvo, who all loved their brother so dearly. Sam was blessed with 8 grandchildren, 3 step- grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
Friends and family may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Road, Erie, PA 16506 on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm which will be followed by a service by Pastor Drew Hines. Interment Laurel Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Chosen Mission Project, 3638 W 26th St, Erie, PA 16506.
