Obituary of Russell Hubert Waha

Russell Hubert Waha Russell Hubert Waha, age 92, of Millcreek Twp., passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s at Asbury Ridge on Sunday, September 10, 2023. Russell was born on March 15, 1931 in Washington Twp., the son of the late Russell Burton and Eleanor M. Swift Waha. He served in the US Army as a Corporal during the Korean War in the Medic Corps and was wounded in combat. Russ received the Purple Heart, Combat Medal Badge, and the Bronze Star among several awards. He was a 1949 graduate of the Waterford Academy and worked more than 50 years as a truck driver, retiring from ABF. Russ was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Erie since 1968 and held several positions within the church. He was also a member of Koinonia of Erie. Of special importance to him was the time given to the Boy Scouts of America. He was a Scoutmaster and Council leader for over 40 years and was presented with numerous awards for his Scouting leadership. Additionally, Russ enjoyed camping, hunting, traveling, dirt track and NASCAR racing, and was a member of the Pioneer Steam and Engine Society. He was a devoted father and grandfather enjoying many hours on bleachers and in auditoriums watching his kids and grandkids in all of their activities. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother and two sisters; Ruth Bedow and Margaret Ethridge. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Linda L. McCray Waha. He is further survived by his children: Dale H. Waha (Linda) of Mercer, PA; Debra M. Proctor (Daniel O’Brien) of Lawrence Park; Russell L. Waha (Rachel) of Waterford; Jennifer Waha-Smith (Mike) of Chicago, IL; nine grandchildren, four great- grandchildren; one brother, Allen Waha (LuAnn) of Waterford, and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff and nurses at St. Mary’s at Asbury Ridge for the compassionate care they gave to Russell. Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Sunday, September 17, 2023 from 3 pm until 6 pm and are invited there on Monday, September 18, 2023 at 10 am for the Funeral Service. Interment will be at Waterford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Asbury United Methodist Church, 4703 West Ridge Road, Erie, PA 16506 or to the French Creek Council, Boy Scouts of America, 1815 Robison Road, Erie, PA 16509.
