Chester (Chet) L. Griswold
Chester (Chet) L. Griswold was born on December 17, 1918 and passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2010. He was the son of the late Frank M. and Jessie Fuessler Griswold and the beloved husband of Yvonne Riddle Griswold.
Chet attended Strong Vincent High School and then was called to participate in the D-Day Invasion of France and other campaigns throughout France and Belgium during WWII. With his many electronic skills, he was selected to serve as a radio operator with the 35th Army Division. He was awarded the Medal of the Jubilee of Liberty from the Regional Council of Normandy, France.
Upon his return to Erie, Chet was employed as a Service Technician for Erie County Maytag Company of Erie and later, with his wife, Yvonne, owned and operated Fullerton Appliance Center. He was awarded a 50 year commendation from the Maytag Company for his association with and service as a dealer in home appliances.
Chet was a lifetime member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. He was a member of the East Erie Turners and the Erie Maennerchor Clubs where he and Yvonne enjoyed many happy dinners with friends and family.
Residing in Erie all his life, he recently was a resident of the Sarah A. Reed Retirement Center. Chet was known by name by all employees and staff and particularly enjoyed playing the piano music provided by Lois.
Survivors include his sons: David L. (wife Dolores), Richard W. (wife Julie), and Kenn F. Griswold; seven grandchildren: Scott Griswold, Suzanne Dunahue, Carrie Laska, Erin, Annie, and Leeann Griswold, and Paul Griswold. Also surviving are great-grandchildren; Samantha, Kylie, Joshua and Jacob Griswold, Zachary Laska, and Samantha Griswold.
Chet was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne Riddle Griswold, one sister, Mary Brei, and his grandson, Benjamin Griswold.
Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. and are invited on Monday to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. for the funeral service. Interment Laurel Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church Building Fund, 950 West 7th St., Erie, PA 16502.
