John Kanzius, age 64, of Erie, PA and Sanibel, FL died Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at Lee Memorial Health System in Fort Myers, FL. He was born on March 1, 1944 in Washington, PA, the son of the late, Sylvester and Katherine Orenchuk Kanzius. John began several decades in management and ownership of broadcast properties including: WJET-TV, JET-102 FM, and WFGO-FM, all in Erie; WHOT-AM/FM in Youngstown, OH, WWOW-AM in Conneaut, OH, and KRRT-TV in San Antonio, TX, and later cancer research through Therm Med, LLC. John was a member of the Amateur Radio Relay League where he was listed in the Amateur Radio Relay League Hall of Fame. John is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Wussick Kanzius, two daughters, Sherry Kanzius of Seven Fields, PA and Antoinette Palmer and her husband, Todd, of Chagrin Falls, OH, and two grandchildren, Paige and John Palmer. Also surviving are three sisters, Marie Maruskin and her husband, Al, of Washington, PA, Sophie Daniels and her husband, Larry, of Greensburg, PA, Jane Schamitko and her husband, Greg, of Washington, PA, one brother, Joseph Kanzius and his wife, Anne, of Washington, PA, and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., on Sunday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to the Cathedral of St. Paul Episcopal on Monday at 10:30 a.m. for the funeral service conducted by the Very Reverend John P. Downey. Private interment Laurel Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the John Kanzius Research Fund, Palace Business Center, 915 State St., Erie, PA 16501 or to the Cathedral of St. Paul Episcopal, 134 West 7th St., Erie, PA 16501.
