Samuel George Kuntz
Samuel George Kuntz, age 94, of Millcreek Twp., passed away Friday, April 24, 2009 at his residence. He was born April 26, 1914 in Punxsutawney, Bell Twp., PA, son of the late Dora Kuntz. Before moving to Erie in 1938, Sam was the 1931 Valedictorian of Punxsutawney High School.
Sam was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church since 1950, where he served as a Teacher and Superintendent in the Sunday School Program. He had first worked at Marx Toys for 20 years, and then as a Plant Engineer Technician at Smith Meter for 18 years prior to his retirement in 1984. He was a 54 yr member of Tyrian-Commonwealth Lodge #362 F & AM; a 52 yr member of the Temple Royal Arch #215: a 53 yr member of Jerusalem Council #33; a 52 yr member of Mt. Olivet Commandery #30; a 25 yr member of the Zem Zem Shrine Directors Staff and an affiliate member of Lakeland, Fl. Shrine Club. Sam was the oldest volunteer with the Wheelchair program of Shriners Hospital for Children. He loved working with his hands as he helped repair wheelchairs at the Shriners Hospital for the past 13 years and also built the two homes in Erie that he lived in.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Brunner Kuntz, to whom he had been married 56 yrs, a daughter, Jeannine Marie Kuntz, a brother, Philip E. Kuntz, and an infant son. He is survived by one daughter, Deborah K. Redditt (William) of Millcreek; three sons, Dr. Gordon S. Kuntz (Sherrill) of East Lake, Ohio, Roger A. Kuntz (Kathleen) of Millcreek, Richard F. Kuntz (Carolyn) of Fairview; a very dear close friend, Carolyn Dean of Fairview, 12 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, 4216 Sterrettania Rd., on Sunday from 2 to 5 pm and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm and are invited to attend a Funeral Service at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Tuesday at 11 am conducted by Rev. Kimberly Saylor. Interment, Laurel Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1002 Powell Ave., Erie, Pa. 16505 or Shriners Hospital for Children, 1645 W. 8th St., Erie, Pa. 16505. Tyrian-Commonwealth Lodge #362 will conduct a service at the funeral home on Monday at 7:30 pm.
