Robert John Lowther, Sr.


1924-2009


Robert John Lowther, Sr., age 85, a former resident of Philadelphia, PA and Atlantic Beach, FL, died Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at St. Mary's at Asbury Ridge.


Mr. Lowther attended the University of Pennsylvania and joined the Keystone Division of the Pennsylvania 28th Army Infantry 109th Division Regiments from Philadelphia, PA in 1943. As a front line artillery forward observer, his military service included the Battle of the Bulge, the German Siegfried Line in 1944, and the liberation of Verdun, Colmar, and Paris. He was a decorated veteran and participated in the battles of D-Day and Bastogne, France. Wounded twice he was the recipient of two Purple Hearts. Mr. Lowther was a forty year employee of Chevron Corporation, fka, Gulf Oil Corporation, Research and Development, in oil and space exploration. He was a member of the F. & A. M. Fernwood Lodge No. 543 in Philadelphia, PA for fifty years.


He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Leona Hensler Lowther, a daughter, Nadine Swan, Atlantic Beach, FL, a son, Robert John Lowther, II (Carrie), Edinboro, PA, and five grandchildren: Nathan Swan, New York City, NY, Jennifer Lowther, Robert John Lowther, III, John Lowther, and Bryan Lowther all of Edinboro, PA.


Private services and interment at the 28th Division Cemetery in Indiantown Gap VA National Cemetery, Annville, PA were handled by the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd.
