Obituary of Sylvia McKenzie

Sylvia Herschel McKenzie Sylvia Herschel McKenzie, age 95, born on June 6, 1917 in Hamburg, NY, died at Millcreek Community Hospital on January 13, 2013. She was the daughter of the late, William Herschel and Emilie Christ Herschel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. McKenzie, two sisters, and a niece. She is survived by her son, Scott C. McKenzie (Helen) of Millcreek Twp.; a nephew, Thomas Manley, of Knoxville, TN; and a niece, Barbara Whiteman, of San Diego, CA. She attended the Albright Knox Institute and was employed as an advertising manager with Eaton Brothers Corp. in Hamburg, prior to coming to Erie in 1948. She was an active member of Presque Isle Garden Club, Pioneer Garden Club, the Westminster Lunch Bunch, and the First United Methodist Church of Erie. Sylvia was a descendent of the family of Sir William Herschel, the astronomer, and took a special interest in nature, especially gardening, birds, fossils, and meteorites. No calling hours will be observed. Private interment will be held at Laurel Hill Cemetery. A memorial service will take place at First United Methodist Church at 7th and Sassafras on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. James R. Wagner.
