George William Schermer George was a life long resident of Erie County. After years of fighting leukemia and years of being there for his wife of 61 years, Doris Elaine Bogue Schermer, who is in the throes of Alzheimer's and kidney failure he is at peace. He knows his wife is being taken care of and he can move on. George, age 79, died Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Hamot Medical Center. He was employed fifteen years at Hamilton Lumber and thirty years with the Millcreek Twp. Streets Dept. where he retired from in 1992. He came from a long line of farmers and was involved in farming while raising his family. He was a person who needed to teach, love, give advice to, and have fun at his hunting camp. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing cards, and bowling. George was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothea Ann Gardner Schermer, his father, William Edward Schermer, his step-mother, Marie Schermer, and a beloved brother-in-law, Russell Wright, a nephew, Michael Schermer, who also passed from here with leukemia, and an infant sister, Edna Mae. He is survived by his wife, Doris Elaine Bogue Schermer and their seven children: Dorothy Schermer Neenan (Michael), Beverly Schermer Smith (Joe), Sandra Schermer Forbes (Dennis), Donna Schermer Shaw (Jeff), Bruce Schermer (Laura Shontz), Gary Shermer (Jennie Bizzarro), Kelly Schermer Calabrese (Daniel), 16 grandchildren: Deborah Neenan Davis (Scott), Brian Neenan (Lynn), Jodi Smith Baldwin (Wayne), Amy Jo Smith, Chad Smith, Dennis Forbes, Jr. (Sandi), Tracy Forbes Collins (Daniel), Trevor Shaw, Abigail Shaw, Adrienne Schermer, Brandon Schermer, Amanda Schermer, Paul Schermer, Danielle Calabrese, Cayce Calabrese, Camren Calabrese, and seven great-grandchildren: Aaron Davis, Andrew Davis, Aubree Neenan, Garrett Neenan, Baby Neenan, Nicholas Collins, Mackenzie Collins. Also surviving are two sisters, Evelyn Schermer Wright, Mildred Schermer Martz (Walter), and his brother, Charles Schermer (Irma), brother-in-law, Richard Bogue, a dear cousin, Donald Heidler (Beverly), and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited there on Wednesday for the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment Laurel Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of Pleasant Ridge Manor-West, 8300 West Ridge Rd. Girard, PA 16417 or to the Mike Schermer Cancer Benefit c/o Kathy Crossley, 6967 Crane Rd., Edinboro, PA 16412.
