Please share a memory of Marjorie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Marjorie (Marge) Fernandes Zimmerman Marjorie (Marge) Fernandes Zimmerman went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 31, 2011. She was born in Erie on December 6, 1924, the daughter of the late Maurice A. Fernandes and Mary Margaret Magill. On August 30, 1947, Marge married the love of her life, the late Lester (Bud) Zimmerman. Marge was a woman of action with a zest for life! In 1945, she joined the U.S. Navy, serving two years as a Wave. She worked at American Sterilizer for many years and also spent time as a terminal manager for Motor Express, a trucking company. She and Bud owned and operated Zimmerman's Bar at 31st and Chestnut Streets. For a number of years, Marge also sold real estate, working for Naz Servideo Realtors. By all standards, Marge was ahead of her time. She and her husband "flipped" 10 homes during their marriage. After his death, she looked at his saws and tools and decided to put them to use. Self-taught, she built lovely furniture pieces which grace the homes of her family. Marge was equally comfortable with a saw or a needle in hand. As a seamstress, she made and mended clothes for her sister, Carol, and Jennifer and Jeff, her "grandchildren". She was Carol's right hand in raising Jennifer and Jeff after their father's untimely death at a young age. Marge had a great sense of humor and a great big smile that lit up her face. At slight urging, she would offer her rendition of the famous Zimmerman Clan song! Marge enjoyed completing the daily crossword puzzle, going to the Erie and Salamanca casinos, playing cards, especially Texas Hold'Em, and being in Card Club with her girlfriends. She was always ready for a trip and a new adventure. Most of all, Marge was a woman of love. She loved her family and her friends and her greatest joy was being with them. Her impact on and contribution to all the lives she touched is beyond counting. She was a great treasure and her "larger than life" presence, smile and laughter will live on in the hearts and memories of all who loved her. Marge leaves behind to cherish her memory her beloved sister, Carol Huey, whom she loved as a daughter and Carol's children, Jeffrey Scott Huey and Jennifer Jane Kiel, both of Erie, whom she considered her grandchildren. She is also survived by her great grandchildren and her beloved brothers, James Fernandes and wife, Linda, of Oklahoma City, OK, and Robert Fernandes, Floral City, FL She was preceded in death by her brother, Maurice Fernandes, of Erie. Friends may call at Sacred Heart RC Church, 816 West 26th St. on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Entombment Calvary Cemetery.
