Obituary of Barry Griffith

Barry L. Griffith, 87, of Erie died peacefully at UPMC- Hamot on Sunday, July 21, 2013. He was born on November 29, 1925 in Johnstown, PA, son of the late G. Earl and Stella James Griffith. Barry graduated from Dale High School in Johnstown in 1943. On his 18th birthday he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and spent 2½ years on the U.S.S. Uvalde in the Pacific Theater as a Radioman. He returned in 1946 and attended college at Pitt-Johnstown. He went to work for G.T.E. and retired in 1985 after 38½ years. Prior to retirement he worked at Johnstown, Franklin, Sayre, Erie, and then Marion, OH. He was an active member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, The Golden K. Kiwanis, Elk Valley Friday Senior League, The Zukor Club, and The Siebenbuerger Club. He enjoyed golf, fishing, traveling, and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Barry married his high school sweetheart, Mirriam Richardson Griffith, in 1948 and they had three children, all of whom survive: Brian (Barbara), Paul (Cheryl), and Linda Miles ((Michael), all of Erie. He was very proud of them and all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Melissa Miller (Jonathan), Adam Griffith (Amy), Courtney Miles, Kyle and Austin Griffith, Joshua Miles (Tirzah), Melissa Whitney, Jared Mosier (Aye). The great-grandchildren gave him so much pleasure: Moira, Marie, Dylan, Chloe, Avery, Jasmine, and Wesley and he loved spending time with them. Also surviving is one sister, Mary Lou Jacobs, of Colorado Springs, CO and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter, Maeve Alice Miller, two sisters; Dorothy Campbell and Helen Griffith, and three brothers: John, Don, and Herbert Griffith. Friends are invited to call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Wednesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited on Thursday to a funeral service at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 3520 Perry Street, Erie, PA 16504 at 11:00 a.m. Private interment Laurel Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gift Fund at Emmanuel Presbyterian.
