Powell A. Brown Sr.
Powell A. Brown, Sr., age 87, of Millcreek Twp. was called to our Lord on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 11, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late Powell and Emma L. Gunkel Brown.
He served during WWII in the Army stationed in Germany under General Patton. He received the Good Conduct and Victory Medals. He was a 1944 graduate of Wesleyville H.S. and received his electrical engineering degree from Fenn College. He was employed at Erie Resister (Erie Technological) and AVX in Olean, N.Y. until his retirement. He was formerly a ham radio operator, a member of the Sportsman Band, played in the Shrine German Band and the Masonic Brass Band, and was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, where he served as the President of Council, sang in the choir, and was an usher. He was a member of Lawrence Lodge No. 708, F. and A.M. and was a member of the Shrine Club. He wintered in Bradenton, Florida with his wife of 61 years, Ruth J. Schlindwein Brown. While in Florida he participated in the Masonic Hi-Twelve Group, played in the Brass Band, and sang with the Bay Chorale.
He is also survived by three daughters: Alice E. Niebauer (Paul), of Millcreek Twp., Cheryl E. Adams (Tom Skarupski), of Millcreek Twp., Patricia M. Morris, of Salamanca, N.Y., two sons; Powell A. Brown, Jr., of Millcreek Twp., Robert L. Brown (Pam), of Clearwater, Florida, thirteen grandchildren: Sam, Matt and Adam Niebauer, Heather Szymczak, Andrea Herrmann, Rachel Ganzer, Powell Brown, III, George Brown, Chevon Gruelich, Sabrina Parsons, Ken Morris, Jr., Michele Morris, Josh Morris, and twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Susan Brown.
Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Friday from 2 to 5p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m. The funeral service will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. conducted by The Reverends Robin Swope and Carl Hull. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 1645 West 8th Street, Erie, PA 16505 or St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 1024 Peach Street, Erie, PA 16501.
