Obituary of Frederick Matthis

Frederick "Fred" K. Matthis, age 71, of Erie, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at his residence. He was born on January 23, 1943 in Indiana, PA, the son of the late Raymond and Kathleen Wagner Matthis. He served in the US Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Fred was employed at McShane Welding as a fitter welder. He was a member of the Knights of St. John and VFW Post 470 where he served in their Honor Guard unit. Fred was an avid Steelers fan and a fan of Rusty Wallace in NASCAR. He is survived by five children: Kelly Mayhue, Kenneth F. Matthis, Ronald S. Matthis, Sherry R. Fish (Richard), and Patrick J. Matthis all of Erie, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters. He was preceded in death by one brother. Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Monday from 5 p.m. until time of service there at 7:00 p.m. followed by a full military service at 7:30 p.m. conducted by VFW Post 470. Private interment. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family in care of the funeral home.
