Cindy graduated from General Mclane high school 1972 and Penn State 1976 spending the first 2 yr at Behrend and the last 2 at University Park. I met her fall 1972 in freshman calculus class at Behrend as we were one of the few women in the class and sat next to each other. Cindy commuted in a Ford pinto car and would wash her car at least once a week and would park her car next to another pinto or small car so it would have a friend while she was at class. Due to staffing problems Behrend scheduled a chemistry lab for about 12 students summer 1973 that was a prerequisite for organic chemistry. The professor gave instructions at the beginning and then left. Cindy and I chose to be lab partners. One week we had to filter our unknown substance through a long filtration tube by letting it drip over 1 hr or longer. At 15 min we discovered we set it too fast and almost all the fluid had passed through.the tube. Cindy decided the only option was to shut it off, hope for the best, and drive to Wendy’s for an hour. We came back happy and a few students asked where we went but most didn’t notice. We finished the lab and got good enough results to get good grades on the lab report. The next week Cindy said that there must have been some acid in something we used because she had small holes in her jeans after she washed them. I had to apologize to my mother because I blamed her for the holes I also had in my jeans when my mother washed them for me. That summer Cindy brought her baby sister Karen to Behrend so we could all meet her . - Jeanne Bauman
