Billy and David's family,
It's been many years since I have had any contact with David -- "Dort", if you will. Still, my memories of him, your Mom and Dad, and you are fresh in my mind. When I saw the obituary, I decided I must spend a few minutes telling you how much I thought of him.
Our friendship began 60+ years ago in Boys Baseball. I don't think we were ever teammates, but I am certain we were friendly opponents. David was a "phenom" of sorts, an outstanding hitter, and an excellent fielder. Throughout the years David launched a lot of homeruns mostly to left field and made a number of memorable plays in the field . . . third base most of the time. For many years during summer vacation, we would meet at Hamilton playground to play ball with such characters as "Pets", "Feathers", "Chopper" Tommy T, and many others too numerous to name. When we got to High School at Strong Vincent, we often played together in the infield, David at third, me at second.
As adults, having taken different career paths, and not always residing in Erie, we largely went our separate ways. That said there were occasional meetings that I always enjoyed.
At times like this, it can seem somewhat trite to say you and he are in my thoughts and prayers, but please know that you and he (and his family) are ... and I really mean it.
