I've known Jim for so long . .. such a passionate voice for justice and marginalized folks. I remember his amazing home in Edinboro with Sandy, one of my mom's dearest friends, with .. do I remember this right? . . . a tree in the middle? He was so tireless in his help to unfairly incarcerated prisoners . . . and so loving and patient with Annette. Erie has lost a one-of-a-kind man. Kim (Rudy) Winbush

We Andersons knew Jim with his childhood nickname: Butch. He was our cousin, friend and intellectual leader of the pack. Butch became my Captain on his sloop, Darwin. He taught me to sail from Erie to Buffalo, to Dover (Canada), Erieau (Canada), and several other ports on Lake Erie. We had the most fantastic adventures together for years. Here are a few pictures and a map of one of our voyages. We visited North Bass Island on that trip. That's where the Wise side of our family came from.
Captain-Cousin Butch and I had some great adventures together. RIP to my Captain, Cousin, Friend.

Jim is known as Butch to some family members including me. We were’t playmates as children because of our age difference. But as a child I remember him singing Old Man River and sounding like an adult. Perhaps he was in a high school play? And wearing a Navy uniform. And working on a PhD. And later putting in many years teaching and influencing. And loving his Father who he called “my hero.”’ And loving his Nanny and his Aunt Bea and Uncle Oppie. And bring so proud of his son. And he was always a loving caring caregiver.
Butch was generous and fun and he will be missed by many.

I have fond memories of Cousin Butch from when I was a kid. I remember collecting Monarch butterflies with him in Troyer farm buckets at the peninsula and going for walks in the woods near his cabin. At his cabin, he would always tie Geoffrey up to a chair and I would be amazed to see Geoffrey escape the knots like Houdini. I also remember Cousin Butch showing his first cousins a really good time while putting his biology knowledge to recreational use.
Cousin Butch - Please give Uncle Jim, Gramma and Grampa, and Robbie a great big hug from me. XXOO
Love,
Debbie
